Resident Evil: The Final Chapter hit theaters last week and Joy and I took a Friday afternoon off to complete the series. This movies has all sorts of problems between trying to have it make sense in respect to the movies that came before it, having it work as a stand alone movie, and trying to tie up any questions that might have been left out in the previous movies. The biggest problem i have this movie is that it picks and chooses plot points from the previous five movies to create its own movie, while basically forgetting about things that seemed to be important at other times. I was happy that they at least decided to bring back zombies to play a part of the movie even its just more of an environmental hazard. At the start of the movie, we’re back on a solo mission of Alice (Milla Jovovich) trying to save the world from impending doom in a 48 hour ticking clock, which in end didn’t really matter. The movie suffers from too many jump cuts, blackouts, video game logic, to finally retconning a back story to our main character.
I think the movie plays better as an individual movie, but strays too far as part of the series as a whole. It tries to create a sense of closure, but never takes it as far enough where at the end of the movie you feel unsatisfied. As far as being a “final” movie we’ll see if it stays final in another five years.

Movie #2 continued with the zombie trend from the first movie but never built up the world but rather seemed to narrow it down. - Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)
Movie #5 just didn’t move the series along, and had no consequence one way or another.
